David M. Williams, Ph.D. is an Improvement Advisor and founder of DMWAustin. He advises organizations in the US, Canada, and Europe on applying the science of improvement and integrating quality into business strategy.
Dave started his career as a volunteer firefighter in high school and worked as a paramedic in the Washington, DC metro area, Springfield, MA, Charlotte, NC, and Austin, TX where he was the Commander overseeing quality management for Austin-Travis County EMS.
Today, Dave devotes his work to the science of improvement. He is an improvement advisor for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and has worked on large-scale improvement and patient safety projects in the US and Europe. He also has worked in public safety, medical transportation, family business, education systems, academia, and aerospace.
Dave taught undergraduate courses in emergency services at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences EMS Management program and at the St. Edward’s University Public Safety Management program. He is also on the faculty of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement IHI Open School for Health Professions.
Dave is a member of the 2013 Leadership Austin Essential Class and is on the board of CommUnityCare, the federally qualified health center system serving the City of Austin, Texas.
Dave earned a B.S. in EMS Management and an M.S. in Emergency Health Services Management. He also earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Systems where his research focused on the obstacles to patient-centric EMS system design.
Dave lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and two children.
